Mountainous and wealthy, with a population of 7.5 million, Switzerland is known for its enviable quality of life. Its products are sought after worldwide, from its cheese and chocolate to luxury watches. One of its most beautiful and cultured cities is Geneva, which is situated on Lake Geneva at the mouth of the River. Geneva is home to the United Nations and plays host to many international conferences throughout the year.

The old city is located on the southern shore of Lake Geneva. The railway station is north of the river, and the airport northwest of the city at the French border. Most attractions are within walking distance and the public transport system of buses and trams is reliable.

Geneva offers extensive banking and shopping areas and is both artistic and cultural. It has many museums and historical sights. You may care to visit one of the many parks, many created by the financial input of Geneva’s wealthy citizens. During the summer, you can watch a free concert in one of the theatres or simply enjoy the nightlife.

Currency

The currency in Switzerland is the Swiss Franc but the Euro is also accepted by most businesses. However you can expect to pay a premium rate. Most transactions in Geneva are conducted in cash and, surprisingly, a number of businesses and restaurants do not accept credit cards so you will need to be prepared. ATMs are available throughout the city.

Climate

Due to the effects of the lake and mountains, Geneva’s climate is pleasant almost year round. September and October are the wettest months. January and February are the coldest. However, the temperature rarely drops below freezing. Summers are long with low humidity and cool breezes from the lake. Mont Blanc is visible from Geneva for much of the year.

Accommodation

Geneva caters to the highest of tastes to the lowest of budgets. Over 14,000 beds are available in the city centre. These range from student hostels to luxury 5-star hotels. Despite this huge capacity, reservations are recommended. In Geneva, hotels fill up quickly, especially during summer. Major conferences and exhibitions are held here throughout the year so it is best to plan ahead.

Driving in Switzerland

Driving in Switzerland is on the right. Roads are well maintained and signposted. You are not allowed to use the horn after dark. You may need to carry snow chains and ski tires if you intend traveling to the mountains. Always carry your driving license.

Motorway driving in Switzerland requires a "vignette" pass. This must be displayed on your windscreen and is obtained from the Swiss National Tourism Offices, which are found throughout Switzerland. In towns the limit is 50 kilometers per hour whereas on major roads the speed limit is 80 kilometers per hour.

Switzerland prides itself on the cleanliness of its towns and cities and of its environment. Geneva is no exception and so, when waiting at traffic lights or railway crossings, you are required to switch off your engine to avoid traffic pollution.
