Fès - Morocco's magical city

Fès in Central Morocco is a very beautiful city and is quite different from all the other cities in the world.
Fès is a lot bigger than you would expected. It has 2 main parts, one is the modern city and the other is the old city the Medina. The modern and old city are pretty far from each other, so you can either plan to walk or take your chances and try to get a taxi instead.
Fès is also the city favored by the King of Morocco. His royal family has four huge territories with one or more huge, beautiful houses on them, although you can not see them, because of the high walls all around the compounds.
The city is growing, and is becoming more and more famous all around the world. The city is alive with dozens of architectural and business projects, which will make the modern city a shining metropolis for years to come.
Fès is called the religious and cultural center of Morocco, and is located in the north of the country, surrounded by hills, about three hours drive from both Casablanca and Rabat on the Atlantic Ocean coast.
The Medina is really an unforgettable part of the city, with all its medieval atmosphere, the unchanged houses and shops. The really unique attraction is to see how the craftsmen prepare and color the animal skins in the many little coloring basins especially made for this, they remind you of bees working by the beehives, such a unique picture (and an awful smell :) ). These craftsmen are not always easy to find but the locals can often help and lead you to the rooftops of a store from where you can enjoy this whole wonderful spectacle.

Leather tanning in Fes
See the donkeys who are the cars and trucks of the local shoppers, and carry back and forth all the goods. Be careful though, sometimes they are just there because you can’t always hear them come.
The old streets will lead you to the local food market, the souk, where there are always a dozen things happening. It is highly recommended to enjoy the whole atmosphere fully, you are guaranteed never to forget it.
Try a local bath or hamam (also known as a Turkish bath), if you would to refresh, but beware, afterwards you will be very sleepy! So go before taking a nap.
Unfortunately you cannot go inside a mosque but they are simply spectacular and the voice of the imam is so wonderful when he calls for people to pray.
The sweets are wonderful, and also colorful. Don't forget to buy some, and also remember that Fès is also the city of leather; you can find all kind of leather goods of the highest quality.
Try the local couscous, which is one of the greatest foods on earth; try the delicious Tajine which are prepared in a hundred styles and all of them are simply great.
And don't forget to take a thousand photos! You will surely never forget this unique city, and the photos will give motivation both for you and all your friends and family who look at the photos to return, to visit, to enjoy Fès’ unforgettable atmosphere again.
And in you still have more time visit the Andalusian gardens and the local Jewish cemetery.
And just one last tip: beware of the taxis and of money change. Taxis are red or big white Mercedes and it's not easy to hail one, and don't be surprised people use them like a bus, because so many people travel to many destinations in a taxi.
Enjoy your adventures!
