Lanzarote - Island of Fire
Lanzarote is one of the seven Canary Islands - the second most popular holiday destination in Spain after Catalonia.
Located around eighty miles off the coast of West Africa and on a similar line of latitude to parts of Mexico and Florida.
This location creates a great climate all year round - with temperatures that average 20 Celsius and very little rainfall, which in tandem with the island's close proximity to the main European tourist markets of the UK and Germany helps to attract over one million foreign visitors every year.
Lanzarote´s best known attraction are the Fire Mountains at Timanfaya, which are set at the epicentre of a series of eruptions which rocked Lanzarote during the 1730´s and again in 1824, leaving large swathes of the interior covered in lava and resembling the surface of the moon.
Elsewhere on the island a local artist called Cesar Manrique worked with this twisted terrain to create a series of unique visitor attractions, such as the Jameos del Agua, a tunnel in the surrounding lava flow which Manrique transformed into an underground concert venue and nightclub.
